Calendar13 February – Alison, Ellie and Michelle
This is the February page from ScienceGrrl’s 2013 calendar. It stars:
Alison Auld, MEng, is a PhD student at Durham University. She is researching ways of generating energy from the unused heat generated in industrial processes. She doesn’t think we should “waste waste!” This is especially important in a world where fuel sources are becoming more and more scarce. She loves the outdoors and can often be found whitewater kayaking.
Ellie Cosgrave, MEng, is currently an engineering doctorate student at the University of Bristol. She is researching how information technology is changing the way that cities operate, and thus how city leaders should invest. Her research sits at the boundary between engineering, economics, sociology and politics. Ellie is also often found attached to her cello, which she plays in an unknown, yet outstanding, South London band.
Michelle Oyen, PhD, is a lecturer in the Cambridge Engineering Department. She and her team work on bone: understanding its properties and trying to recreate it in the lab. The team wants to help build medical implants, but also thinks artificial bone has an application in buildings. Michelle loves teaching and is passionate about encouraging more girls to think about a career in engineering.
